Pushing Back Against the Indoctrination

It seems that we are regularly bombarded by attacks upon Southern heritage, history, Confederate flags and monuments, and often hear such ignorant comments as, “Confederates were traitors,” “Democrats are the party of slavery, racism, and the KKK,” and the favorite one, “the Civil War was fought to free the slaves.” Oh, let’s not leave out “segregation and Jim Crow Laws.”
Well, while trying to keep this article within a respectable length, these issues will be addressed, with links to other articles.
Let’s start with, “the Civil War was fought to free the slaves.” First of all, nobody was trying to take over the U.S. government, so we have never had a “Civil War.” Some more appropriate names for it are, “The War to Prevent Secession,” “The War Between the States,” “The War to Prevent Southern Independence,” and my personal choice, “The War of Northern Aggression,” because that is what it was. Had Lincoln not invaded, there would have been no war.
So, the South fought to “protect and perpetuate slavery,” while the North “fought to free the slaves.” At least this is what has been indoctrinated into most Americans for 150+ years. The problem with this is that it doesn’t make sense for the North to be “fighting to liberate slaves” while there were slave states in the Union, with over 429,000 slaves (1860 Census). Also, West Virginia was admitted into the Union as a slave state during the war. Lincoln also countermanded General Fremont’s orders and had emancipated slaves returned to their owners in Missouri. You can’t be “fighting to free the slaves” while you have slaves yourself and re-enslave ones that were emancipated. It just doesn’t add up.
Plus, Lincoln himself stated the war was not about slavery, but to “put the flag back.”

Lincoln actually invaded the legally seceded South in order to continue the collection of excessive and unconstitutional taxes. No part of the country is to be taxed for the benefit of another, yet this is precisely what was taking place with the South paying 85% of the federal revenues, which went to benefit Northern railroads, industry, and banks, with the South getting very little in return. This is called wealth redistribution.

We are not taught in school that it was the New England Yankees who worked the slave trade, on ships built by slaves, and flying Old Glory on their masts. No Confederate flag ever flew on a slave ship, yet it is called the “flag of slavery” and a “racist flag,” while Old Glory flew over slavery for over 80 years, but gets a free pass. Seems a bit hypocritical, to say the least.

The idea of Confederates being “traitors” is absurd. They legally withdrew from the Union they had voluntarily joined. Three states: New York, Rhode Island, and Virginia, upon ratifying the U.S. Constitution, specifically stated that they reserved the right to reclaim the powers delegated to the U.S. if they felt at any time that they were being harmed. A right held by one state is held by all. Also, no Confederate was ever tried for treason. President Jefferson Davis spent two years in prison waiting for what was to be “the trial of the century.” U.S. Supreme Court Justice Salmon P. Chase said that no Confederate could be tried for treason because, by the Constitution, secession is not illegal. He said that what was won on the battlefield would be lost in court. What would the families of all those dead Union soldiers have to say about that, if the case for fighting to prevent secession was lost in court, which it would have been? Also, if secession was illegal, why were bills submitted in the U.S. Congress, during the war, to make secession illegal? None passed.

Comparing the two political parties of today to what they were in the 19th century is comparing apples to oranges. The Democratic Party was the party of conservatism at that time, and the Republican Party favored big government.
Also, thinking that the original KKK was the same as that of the 20th and 21st century is, again, comparing apples to oranges. The original KKK was a necessary organization to defend citizens, black and white, from the terrorist Union League. This KKK not only consisted of whites, but blacks as well. It was disbanded in 1877.

While the “evil South” gets all the blame for segregation and Jim Crow Laws, the fact that these originated in the North somehow gets left out of the history books, Hollywood, and the media. The fact is race relations were really quite good in the South before Occupation (Reconstruction). If they weren’t, why were there not any slave insurrections during the war? The men were away fighting, defending their homes and families from an invasion of murderers, looters, arsonists, and rapists. Nobody home but old men, women and children. Seems like a good time to slaughter whites. But it didn’t happen.
Don’t fall for the “accepted narrative”. Push back against the indoctrination.
